Saturday 14 December. Arrival at Kuching. Meal at Lepau

Cat-napping mainly on the flight to KL, I stopped trying to sleep at 04.30. Soon after, everyone was awake and being served breakfast in preparation for arrival at 07.00. I then took a train to the terminal from which my Kuching flight was to leave shortly before 11.00. Immigration was very simple and soon I was in another Malaysian lounge, catching up on a day's emails, messages and so on.
The flight to Kuching was a simple 90 or so minutes and my bag was on the belt as I arrived in the baggage hall after another straightforward immigration.
So I was in my hotel room some 23 hours after leaving the house. Quite a transformation from cold to heat, let alone election fever to focusing on wildlife and so on. After settling in I went for a walk to re-familiarise myself after four years away from Kuching. My instant thought was that I liked it more than as I had remembered it. It has a nice slightly hippyish feel with a slow tempo and lots of cafes and bars. It is also extremely warm with today sunny intervals. I wandered along the river front then along Carpenter Street, which had a strange example of lost in translation.

Some old haunts were unsuited to my new non meat-eating persona and once back at the hotel, I had a quick look for somewhere new to eat. Lepau leapt out at me with its specialism in fish, so off I went for an evening meal. It's a very attractive place with a big welcome. I had a very substantial and delicious meal, the highpoint being the Fish Umai starter.
With a full stomach, sleep beckoned and I turned in at 10.30 after a good day.
